Which version of Discord is right for me?

1. Currently Discord offers multiple platforms to run on. These include:

2. I don't want to download any software.

You may use your web browser. However, features available in the APP will be limited in the browser version.
  • Voice - you must allow the browser applet to access your microphone
  • Push to Talk - only available if browser tab has focus, default is open mic
  • Favorite or Else - If you want to find the server again quickly in your browser, save it to favorites (bookmark)

3. I want to use the APP.

You can download the application (APP) from the links listed in item 1.
  • Download and save the executable file
  • Go to where you saved the executable file and install it.
  • Create a user account with Discord - this is only for you to contact support if it is needed and to verify as a user.

Discord will send a verification email to the mailbox you used to sign-up with. Be sure you check your spam box if you do not see it in your normal inbox.

Connecting to The Alliance Discord server

1. Nickname
  • Nickname must match your Alliance website user name
  • If not a member of the kinship website, use the name you have marked as main in your player note.
  • If not a member of the kinship, follow your own kinship's guidelines.

2. Using your web-browser:

To connect using your web-browser copy this link and paste it in another tab of your browser; https://discord.gg/n4RHUwj

Link will kick you off the server if you do not request a role to be assigned to you once you close your browser/APP. What this means; you will need to re-copy the link from here to connect to the server again.

To become a permanent member of the server, you will need to be a member of The Alliance (any rank), and request either in Discord or in-game for an officer or above to promote you to a server member.

3. Using the APP:
  • Start the App
  • On the far left, below Direct Messages, you will see + enclosed in a circle, click it
  • In the pop-up window click Join a Server
  • Paste the following link: https://discord.gg/n4RHUwj

Link will kick you off the server if you do not request a role to be assigned to you once you close your browser/APP. What this means; you will need to re-copy the link from here to connect to the server again.

4. Now what?:
  • You will now see the server window in 3 sections; Type/Voice Channels - Type chat - Members
  • You will only be able to participate in type chat until you place yourself into a Voice channel
  • All users will have access to the Public Lounge voice room. Click on the title of the channel to enter it.
  • Kin members will have access given to them to enter Kin-only rooms once they request Discord membership.

-NOTE: Connecting to the Discord server will only grant you the privilege to participate in type chat. To use voice chat you must enter a Voice Channel. You also will not hear Voice conversations if you have not joined the Voice Channel of others in that channel.

The Discord user-interface as seen on the APP version:

  1. Private message history / friend list.
  2. Server Membership(s) / join new server
  3. Chat channels - speaker icon is voice chat, # is type chat.
  4. Server settings
  5. Mute Microphone
  6. Mute Sound
  7. User specific settings
  8. Type chat history - file sharing is enabled to share anything from text documents to YouTube videos.
  9. Current membership connected to the server

The Alliance discord server will be updated to allow for more flexibility and future growth for our community. This will detail channel additions and channel removals from the server.

All type chat based channels will be placed into a singular category for ease in finding the channel you wish to post to. This posting will detail each channel and how it should be used.
  1. Welcome – This channel will generate a random hello message to anyone who enters the server. No one will be able to type into this channel. This channel is public and can be viewed by anyone on the server. Message history is disabled, meaning you will only see activity in this channel if you are currently viewing it. Think of this channel as the server itself telling you Hello.
  2. Read This First – This channel will explain the use of the server channels to all users of the server. All members should also review the Alliance Gaming Community codes of conduct before using this service. This channel is viewable at all times by members and non-members. Posting is only allowed by AGC leadership for this channel.
  3. NOTE: Discord has post size limitations. Please refer members to this posting for a more detailed explanation, should they have further questions.
  4. General Discussion – This channel is open to all AGC membership. This channel is for non-game related material and discussion that fits within the guidelines of the Alliance Gaming Community codes of conduct. Members may also post jokes, memes, questions, concerns, as examples. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
  5. Alliance Pets – This channel is a sub-channel of the General Discussion channel and open to all members of the AGC. Here members can post discussions or images of their real or virtual pets. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
  6. LotRO Discussion – This channel is for LotRO game discussion and information only. It can be viewed by all AGC members. STO members and officers can react to posts with emojis but cannot create posts within this channel, unless they are also members of the Alliance Kinship. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
  7. Ladles and Gentlebeans – This channel is a sub-channel of the LotRO Discussion channel. It is only usable and viewable by LotRO members. In this channel members may discuss anything regarding the Alliance Crafting Neighborhood. Cooking, crafting, housing storage, events to boost material stocks, etc. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
  8. STO Discussion – This channel is for STO game discussion and information only. It can be viewed by all AGC members. LotRO members and officers can react to posts with emojis but cannot create posts within this channel, unless they are also members the Alliance Fleet. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
  9. Other Games – If you play another game and wish to share information, screenshots, discussions about it, then use this channel. We know that many of the community members play other games and we want to give all members the opportunity to share what they do within those games. This channel is private and can only be viewed by those who have a server role assigned to them.
Voice active channels will consist of 2 groups;
Lounge Channels
  1. Alliance Recruitment Lounge – this channel will be a gateway channel for new members of the Alliance Gaming Community only. Alliance members seeking membership within the Discord server will join this channel so that their game’s officers can see them, assist in setting their server nickname, and providing them with a server member role. Once this is complete, please move to your game’s lounge room or a group room if you are joining another member in a game activity. Do not remain in this channel nor use it for a group room as it will be limited to allow only 3 users in it at a time and could block other new members to the community from joining the server. This channel is viewable publicly.
  2. Alliance LotRO or STO Lounge – these channels will serve as game specific lounges only. Here members of these respective games may hang out to chat, organize groups, or just listen. These rooms are not to be used as a group room. Please be respectful of other members that may not be in the group and move your group to a group specific channel. These lounges will work by member role assignment. These channels are for and viewable to Alliance members only, based on member role assignments.
  3. Other Games – This lounge is a general lounge for Alliance members only, that may wish to discuss or setup a group activity in a non-LotRO, non-STO game. This channel is for and viewable to Alliance members only. This is also the only lounge in which both LotRO and STO members can meet one another to vocally chat.
Group Channels
  1. PuG Group – This is public usable channel that Alliance members can use IF their group will include non-Alliance members and you want them on Discord to hear instruction. Please only use this channel if your group includes non-Alliance members and they are using Discord to join you. Please do not use this channel for the purpose of inviting non-Alliance members onto the server just to chat. Size limit will be 24 members.
  2. Group 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 24, 36 – These group channels are open to any game Alliance members are playing that only include Alliance members. Please use the channel to best suit your group size or the next larger available channel. These channels are for and viewable to Alliance members only. These rooms are limited on member size to assure you can enjoy the grouping experience without interruption of random members popping in while you in a difficult location in-game to chat casually.
  3. Note 1: This will be the normal group room settings, however, should need require it, additional temporary rooms can be added by cloning existing rooms. This will assure these temporary rooms have the same privacy settings as their parent room. Contact any member of Leadership to have a temporary room created. Usage example. Fornost run in LotRO by low level groups. Fornost has a 6 member setting in-game. Group 6 can be cloned to handle multiple 6-man groups. The temporary rooms can be removed after the event schedule is completed. To clone a room, simply right click the room you wish to clone, and select the clone option, renaming the cloned room is optional.
  4. Note 2: Group channels are not to be used as lounges. Once your group activity Is complete, please return to the member lounge of your respective game or log off of the server. This will open the channel to anyone else wishing to use it.
  5. Note 3: All voice channels are set to be Push to Talk[PTT] preferred. This means that if you are using an open mic setting you will still be able to speak. However, members using PTT settings will be given priority speaker rights through Discord. This setting will temporarily lower the volume of the open mic user while the PTT user is speaking.
Added, Modified, Removed Discord channels.
  • Fredboat music lounge has been removed. Please use Spotify or another app for your music.
  • Event channel has been removed as the bot settings were too complicated for some members and no new events were being added using the bot.
  • Pug Group Small removed – see group channels above.
  • Public Lounge > Alliance Recruiting Lounge and size restriction placed.
  • LotRO Lounge / STO Lounge > LotRO Discussion / STO Discussion, original channels to be archived and eventually deleted. Voice channels will keep the lounge title instead.
